Caravaggio: The Incredulity of St Thomas |
3. Examining Cultural/Ethical Issues Through Arts These seminar and performance events interrogate cultural/ethical issues relevant to healthcare through art and art projects. Work discussed ranges from old masters such as Caravaggio, Vesalius and Rembrant, to medical photography, to the pioneering work of Susan Sontag and Jo Spence, to controversial contemporary artists such as Franko.B and Orlan. We use these art works as a platform from which to explore current thinking about issues relevant to medicine including: sexuality, ownership, control, gender, cloning, the medical gaze, detachment, dissection. Sessions to date include: Body Politics, Dominic Johnson; The Body Emblazoned, Jonathan Sawday; Safe Bodies (The Cultural Discourse around HIV/AIDS), Paul Heritage; The Art of Science and The Science of Art, Ken Arnold (Wellcome Trust).
